Interview with Mohit Sharma "Trendster"

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?

Yes! a patriotic poetic-story "Ye Desh hai Un Verro ka" based on Kargil War around July-August 1999 and later that year it was published in a regional Hindi newspaper "Rashtriy Sahara", I was 11 years old and that feeling of reading my work in printed form with all the newspaper formatting, ads was beyond words-special-memorable.

What is your Writing Process

My first objective is to make my basic story idea unique by trying different permutations & combinations of backdrops, characters, scenes, sub-plots in my mind and finally selecting few. Then proper use of language customized as per character, situation. I often notice authors using same words-style to save their time which is harmful in long run. There is less flexibility in research, non-fic compared to fiction or poetry but focusing on less covered subjects especially analyzing the statistical part can do wonders. 

Though, I am quite random (+ Effort Level: Minimum) when it comes to comedy, poetry, tragedy, dark & related themes, usually complete such stories-poems within couple of hours but surprisingly readers average feedback-ratings on this stuff is better than on everything else I write with more efforts-giving more time.

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?

*) - Regular & targeted activity on various Social Media websites - Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Orkut. Blogging Communities. Book & author listing websites like Goodreads, Writers.net, Published.com, Smashwords. This increases the latent online reach of the book through listings, backlinks, keywords, reviews and recommendations. These websites also offer paid book promotion services offering various schemes. 

*) - Regional Newspapers, Magazines, Publication and NGOs can be approached for the book launch, press release and promotional activities. In case of NGOs please make sure your book's general theme or any of its chapter, sequence deals with the issue that NGO is fighting against or at least you are benefiting that organization in terms of publicity, books, money, service etc. 

... & even if there is no book launch one can focus on developing the author brand by event appearances, organizing contests, online Q & A, volunteering during events especially in creative stuff.

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?

I grew up in multiple cities (U.P. India) as my father is an Uttar Pradesh State employee, yup! India also follows federalism. Lucknow, Agra are the 2 cities where I spent most of my childhood-teenage. In early 90s India was recovering the gear change from closed-license raj country to much more liberal economy which gradually reflected in almost everything. India offers extreme contrasts & diversity which are beautiful & thought provoking at the same time like witnessing these awesome globalization linked changes and still encountering few relatives who have unreasonably strong opinions about certain things, regional variety, religions, languages, locations-topography etc. I regularly write in social issues with Indian backdrops & every time the uniqueness, beauty (Self Praise Alert!!)..oops... :) never ceases to amaze me.

What is your e-reading device of choice?

Kobo and Kindle. Devices are user friendly & epub format is superhit but I want to see economical devices for mass reach & to increase the share of ebook market in near future.

What do you read for pleasure?

Comics, Research Journals, Non Fiction. Unfortunately, read very few books especially novels in my life till date (January 2014).

When did you first start writing?

At the age of 10 I wrote few devotional songs during a 9 day Hindu festival Navratr. Then during Kargil War wrote my first poetic-story. Extra curricular activities were not encouraged in my school but I wrote on topics that fascinated me, mostly current affairs. College was a pleasant change for me as there were no school boundations & the dormant-hibernated writing bug as a revenge bit me so hard that she knocked me unconscious, I am infected since then.

What's the story behind your latest book?

Once in a while I work on a research project on unexplored subjects for a change from monotonous creative schedule(attached social work is a bonus), Postpartum Reproductive Health : India is a redacted report, a sociological study on postnatal health & related medical, economic issues faced by Indian women.There are large number of studies on various dimensions of health, but despite all there are few studies on reproductive health & no study which focused on postnatal reproductive health care.There was this need to conduct such type of study which explore various aspects of postnatal reproductive health illness and care. What motivated you to become an indie author?

I try to write on various genres, topics and in the process often rejected by publishers who find many of my works way too experimental, noncommercial in nature. Sometimes they publish my work but my mainstream rejection rate is high therefore going indie is the only way to release the large volume of experimental stuff I write. For me getting that mainstream commercial balance is not an issue, but convincing myself to self censor or compromise is...I hope this rejection rate drops to 0% in future (..will still publish Indie work).

Fans are like renewable virtual wealth, which is spent on your brand & motivation to continue what you are doing. Their number & response gives you strength to not only write your heart out but also to format, edit, proof read your work (which almost all authors hate). Their feedback guides you & proves to be a catalyst in evolving your approach in certain genres or your writing as a whole. Best part is sometimes few of them surprise you by sharing random facts about you & your works.

What are you working on next?

*) - Multilingual "Infra Surkh Shayars" Poetry Project.

*) - Novel - Maa ka Monologue

*) - Humongous backlog of poems, stories in Hinglish typed back in the days - I have to retype them in devnagri Hindi to be able to sell them. The volume of pending work is scary but will soon publish couple of story & poem collections.

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?

The stats...86400 seconds! The Creativity..this, this, this to be done! The Job...for the sake of records-society-schedule! The Love...!

How do you approach cover design?

I collaborate with uber talented illustrators and/or colorists. Great results every time!

Is 84 Tears your best work till date?

Not the best but perhaps most successful till date (around 700, 000 downloads in 2 years). Special Mention, 84 Tears Artist: Mr. Ravi Shankar.

Deadly Deal (Indi Horror Series) by Mohit Sharma

Wrote "Deadly Deal" (Horror) way back in 2006 & last year (2012) Kuldeep Babbar liked the idea so I wrote a 20 Page script on this story. He made that in record time within 3 weeks but then project got delayed due to other commitments & hurdles. Finally, another artist Atharv Thakur is giving the artworks final touch up. Baali (Vali) was king of Kishkindha, a son of Indra and the elder brother of Sugriva. He was killed by Rama, an Avatar of Vishnu. Vali was famous for the boon that he had received, according to which anyone who fought him in single-combat lost half his strength to Vali, thereby making Vali invulnerable to any enemy. Once Ravana called Vali for a fight when Vali was doing his regular Sandhyavandanam. He took Ravana in his tail and took him around all the world. Humbled, Ravana called for a truce [agreement to stop war tempararly]. It is said in the Ramayana that Vali was very brave and courageous. Before dawn he used to go from the Eastern coast of sea to the Western coast and from the Northern coast of the sea to the Southern coast to pay his homage to Surya - the sun-god. He was so brave and powerful that on his way to pay homage to Surya, he used to toss the mountain peaks upward and catch them as if they were play balls. Also after completing the tedious task of paying homage to the sun god in all the four directions, when he used to return to Kishkindha he does not feel any tiredness. Vali was the husband of Tara. As one myth goes, fourteen types of gems or treasures were produced from the churning of ocean. One gem is that various Apsaras (divine nymphs) were produced and Tara was an Apsara produced from the churning of ocean. Vali who was with the devas, helping them in the churning of ocean, took Tara and married her.

Vali was very courageous this can be understood from the fact that, when Tara tried to stop him and begged him to not to go to fight Sugriva, by saying that it is God (Rama) who is helping Sugriva and has come to Sugriva’s rescue; Vali replied to Tara that even if he is fighting against God he can’t ignore a challenge for a fight and remain quiet. He adds that even if the caller for the fight had been his own son Angada he would still go to fight.

Vali had been known as a good and pious vanara-king, but had been too outraged to heed his brother Sugriva after his brother had sealed the entrance to a cave in which Vali was fighting a rakshasa named Mayavi. Sugriva had mistaken the blood flowing out of the cave to be his brother's, blocked the entrance to the cave with a boulder and left for Kishkindha, assuming that his brother was dead. When Vali had emerged victorious over the rakshasa, he had found that the entrance to the cave was blocked. He journeyed back to kingdom to find Sugriva ruling in his place. Sugriva tried to explain the situation to Vali, but Vali, enraged, would not listen. Vali then nearly kills Sugriva, except that Sugriva was able to escape Vali's grasp. Sugriva barely escaped from the kingdom. When Vali chased Sugriva out of his kingdom, he also claimed Sugriva's main wife, Rumā. Sugriva fled into the forest where he eventually meets Rama and Lakshmana.

"रावण के वध से पूर्व भगवान राम ने बाली को मुक्ति दी थी इसलिए उस दृश्य के मृत्युलोक से दर्शन नहीं हुए। कहते है श्री राम और रावण एक ही राशी के थे फिर कर्मो ने विशाल अंतर कर दिया। त्रेता में जैसे रावण ने सारा पाप अपने सर ले लिया तभी कोई बाली के अंत पर उत्सव नहीं मनाता। परन्तु पाप तो तब भी विद्यमान था प्रजा के मन में बसा किसी अवसर की घात में ...जो भक्त जनता ने माता सीता पर लांछन लगा सिद्ध कर दिया। राम जी के तेज से पाप स्वछन्द कैसे रहता पर रावण की मुक्ति के बाद भी छदम पाप तो था। कहते तो यह भी है की मेरे भाई सुग्रीव की सूरत और कर्म मुझ जैसे थे। पर मेरे अंतरमन में कहीं सुप्तावस्था में छिपा पाप जाग गया और बाली की सुग्रीव से सभी समानताएँ मिट्टी हो गयी।

धर्म और नीरीह की रक्षा में अनैतिकता को अनैतिकता से काटने के लिए सभी विधाओं में निपुण भगवान् श्री कृष्ण का महाभारत में किये आचरण उदाहरण दिया जाता है, पर उस युग से पहले भगवान राम ने बाली को सामने ना आकर मुक्ति दी और पापी को अपने पुरुषोत्तम आचरण से हटकर समाप्त किया। मै धन्य हूँ जो श्री राम ने मुझे मुक्ति देकर उस युग का दूसरा रावण उदय होने से पहले ही अस्त कर दिया। तब ऐसा करने की आवश्यकता कम पड़ती थी पर अब जब हर ओर पाप की परत जमी है तब पाप से पाप को नष्ट करने फिर आया है बाली। मै उन श्री अवतारों के समान तो नहीं बन सकता पर उनका अनुसरण करूँगा जब तक भगवान, कल्कि अवतार लेकर स्वयं मुझे दोबारा मुक्ति देने नहीं आते।

प्रकृति भी अपने नियमो में खुद को बाँधे रखती है। वो अपना प्रारूप बदलती है पर मानव की तरह अपने स्वार्थ साधने के लिये नहीं जिसको लाभ दिखाई देने पर नैतिकता दिखनी बंद हो जाती है, जो अपने मित्र, संबंधी को स्वार्थ के तराज़ू में तोलता है और उनसे लाभ न दिखने पर निकटता समाप्त कर देता है अथवा निकटता का नाटक करता है। जहाँ तक ऐसा मानव देख पाता है या सोचता है स्वार्थ प्रेरित कर्म उसको अपने जीवन के लिए लाभकारी प्रतीत होते है पर यही भ्रमित होकर पथभ्रष्ट होने का प्राथमिक चरण है।

धर्मपरायण जनता ईश्वर से त्राहीमाम करती कहती है की धर्म, सत्य की राह इतनी विकट क्यों है? इसका उत्तर सीधा सा है ईश्वर सत्य की राह पर चलने वाले अनेको में कुछ व्यक्तियों की परीक्षा लेते है की वो इतने सक्षम है जो कलियुग मे हर और फैले अधर्म से युद्ध कर उसे हरा पायें ....अगर कुछ परीक्षाओ बाद भी व्यक्ति सफल नहीं होता तो ईश्वर उसको या तो मूक जनता का सदस्य बना देते है जो चुप सब देखती है या वो समय के साथ अपना चरित्र खोकर अधर्म का अंग बन जाता है।

जब बाली अधर्म के साथ था तो वो शक्तिशाली था और अंतिम समय तक उसको अधिक संघर्ष नहीं करना पड़ा। पर इस युग में जब वो धर्म और सत्य के साथ है तो भगवान ने उसकी और उसके चरित्र की परीक्षा के लिये उसको कई सीमाओ में बाँध दिया ....बाली प्रभु की हर परीक्षा देगा ....सीमान्त तक संघर्ष करेगा।
